How the cost of living crisis is impacting domestic abuse survivors and victims

A recent Sky News investigation has highlighted the devastating impact the cost of living crisis is having on victims and survivors of domestic abuse and violence.
While the rapidly rising cost of living is undoubtedly causing pain for so many around the UK, those living in constant fear of domestic abuse face very unique challenges.
Economic abuse is often part and parcel of domestic abuse – with victims being controlled financially and cut off from their own savings or earnings. In such situations, they may be given access to small amounts of money to pay for essential items such as food, for example, but these paltry ‘allowances’ will now be squeezed further still.
In addition to this specific kind of domestic abuse, the crisis will be creating situations where perpetrators may be spending more time in the home, in turn exposing women to increased harm, just as we saw during recent lockdowns.
Additionally, women who do escape domestic abuse may be finding it harder to manage alone due to the increased cost of living, and, unfortunately, these financial pressures are also affecting some refuges and their ability to continue to provide accommodation.
